Midwest Sociologists for Women in Society was founded in April 1975 at the Midwest Sociological Society annual meeting in Chicago. It published the Tapestries newsletter and then Midwest Feminist Papers on a fairly regular basis. However, the group grew slowly, totalling about 110 members thirteen years after its founding. The Midwest Sociological Society was formed in 1936 to promote the professional interests of sociologists in the middle west. The Society grew along with the post-WWII boom in higher education and became the largest regional group of sociologist by the late 1970s.
